Roadside SOS assistance and jump starts: what to do and what it costs
Car won't start in the car park or stalled on the road? In most cases you don't need a tow truck — the problem is solved on the spot in 20–40 minutes. Here's what to do first, how to tell a flat battery from a bigger fault, and what it costs.
First minutes: safety first
If the car stalls while moving, coast onto the shoulder as far from traffic as possible. Switch on the hazard lights, put on a reflective vest before stepping out and place the warning triangle: 15 m behind the car in a built-up area, 30 m outside one. Passengers are safer behind the barrier than inside the car.
Only then look for the cause. Most call-outs in Latvia come down to one of three things: a flat battery, no fuel, or an ignition or fuel-system fault.
How to tell if the battery is to blame
A flat battery behaves in a very recognisable way. Rapid clicking when you turn the key, a slow-cranking starter or a dashboard that dies during cranking all mean the voltage is too low. If the dash stays bright and the starter cranks normally but the engine never fires, the battery is probably fine and the cause is fuel or ignition.
Batteries fail faster in winter: cold cuts capacity by 30–50 % while the engine needs more current to start. If the car has been cranking slower for weeks, that is your warning to test the battery before it strands you.
How a mobile jump start works
The mechanic arrives with a professional jump starter and first measures battery voltage, starter draw and alternator charging. The jump start happens only after that check — wrongly connected leads or a damaged battery can destroy the car's electronics.
Once the engine runs we measure alternator output under load. If it is below spec we say so immediately: the car will drive away, but the problem returns at the next start. If the battery no longer holds charge, we can bring and fit a new one on the spot.
The service starts from 30 €. Inside Riga on working days the call-out is from 10 €; beyond 20 km we add 0,35 €/km for the whole trip. We confirm the total before setting off — the price does not change afterwards.
When SOS help is not enough
Honest warning: not everything can be fixed on the roadside. A failed clutch, a snapped timing belt, a major coolant leak or crash damage all need a tow truck. In those cases we tell you on the phone before driving out, so you don't pay for a call-out with no result.
What to check before calling
- 1Does the dashboard light up at all — if not, suspect the battery or its terminals.
- 2Are the terminals clean and tight — corrosion is often the whole problem.
- 3Is there actually fuel in the tank (the gauge can lie).
- 4Is the gearbox in P (automatic) or neutral with the clutch pressed (manual).
- 5Was a light or accessory left on overnight and drained the battery.
- 6Pin down your exact location — a Google Maps pin over WhatsApp is fastest.
- 7Have the make, model and plate ready so we bring the right parts.
Prices: SOS help and jump start
Labour prices are fixed and match our price list. The call-out fee is confirmed before we set off. If the service is ordered and cancelled while it is being carried out, the agreed travel costs must be paid by bank transfer.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a jump start cost in Riga?
- The service starts from 30 € plus a call-out from 10 € inside Riga on working days. Beyond 20 km we add 0,35 € per kilometre for the whole trip. We confirm the total on the phone before driving out.
- How fast do you arrive?
- Usually within 60–90 minutes in Riga and greater Riga, depending on the time of day and workload. For other Latvian regions we agree the arrival time on the call.
- Does the price change at night or on weekends?
- Yes. SOS assistance and jump start pricing depends on the time of day and the distance — night and weekend call-outs cost more. The exact total is confirmed before we set off.
- What if the car still won't start after a jump?
- We run computer diagnostics on the spot to find the cause — starter, alternator, fuel pump or ignition. If a roadside repair is not possible we say so honestly and help arrange a tow.
- Can you replace the battery straight away?
- Yes. We bring a new battery matching your car's spec, fit it on site and take the old one for recycling. Fitting from 25 €, the battery itself is charged separately.
