Car battery failing: warning signs, winter problems and what to do on the spot

Seven signs your battery is on its way out

• The starter cranks slower than usual, especially on the first start of the day.
• The car only starts on the second or third attempt after standing overnight.
• Headlights dim noticeably while cranking and the dash display blinks off.
• The clock, radio presets or steering angle settings keep resetting.
• A battery icon or charging-system warning appears on the dashboard.
• The battery is more than 4–5 years old — the typical life in the Latvian climate.
• White or greenish deposits on the terminals: poor contact and charging losses.

Why batteries die suddenly in winter

Two things happen at once in the cold. Chemical reactions slow down, so at −15 °C the available capacity drops by 30–50 %. At the same time engine oil thickens, so the starter needs considerably more current. A battery that was 'good enough' in summer simply cannot clear that bar in winter.

The third factor is short trips. If you drive 10–15 minutes across town each day, the alternator never recovers what the starter took, on top of heated windows, seats and lights. The charge level drifts down over a week and one morning the car just clicks.

How to jump-start correctly

Incorrect jump-starting destroys dozens of control modules every winter. The order matters:

• Both cars switched off, with no metal parts touching.
• Red lead first to the flat battery's positive, then to the donor's positive.
• Black lead to the donor's negative, and the other end not to the flat battery but to a bare metal earth point on the dead car's engine.
• Start the donor car and let it run for 3–5 minutes.
• Crank your car for no more than 10 seconds at a time, with pauses in between.
• Remove the leads in reverse order and drive for at least 30 minutes without stopping.

New battery or just a recharge?

Measurements decide, not guesses. A healthy battery at rest reads about 12.6 V; 12.2 V is roughly half charged; below 12.0 V it is deeply discharged. With the engine running, voltage should be 13.8–14.4 V — anything lower points at the alternator, and a new battery will not fix that.

On a call-out we measure resting voltage and cold cranking amps with a load tester and check the charging circuit. If the battery is healthy and a recharge is enough, we say so. If replacement is needed, labour is 25 € and a new battery (60 Ah and up) starts from €70. We keep the car's memory alive with a support supply so windows, steering and start-stop calibration are not lost.
